Call to undefined function PMA_sanitize()

ubuntu server 12.04 LTS
phpadmin 4:3.4.10.1-1

PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function PMA_sanitize() in
/usr/share/phpmyadmin/libraries/Message.class.php on line 601


How can I fix this please? I've tried purging it from my system and
reinstalling. I've done the same with apache. All that's left to purge
is mysql, but I would really prefer to find a better solution.

phpMyAdmin 3.4.10 is outdated and no longer supported.
